The Biozentrum Symposium 2009
On December 11, 2009 the scientific staff of the Biozentrum met for the annual up-to-date exchange of the Institute’s current research work. The event is the information platform for scientists, post-docs and students alike who wish to get an overview of the various ongoing research projects.

As in the years before, the Biozentrum Symposium 2009 took place in the UBS Conference Center in Basel, and renewed last year’s record with 320 registrations. The Advisory Board Members were also present and Prof. Gilles Laurent from the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Frankfurt and Prof. Ruedi Aebersold from the ETH Zurich, both new members of the Scientific Advisory Board, gave the two key-note lectures.
As this year’s event was organized by the Divisions of Biophysics and Molecular Biology, it was their Chairman, Heinrich Reichert, who welcomed everyone in the morning. His opening remarks were the prelude to a tight but enriching agenda with various presentations from the Focal Areas and Core Programs. For the first time, all the sessions were chaired by female professors and it was Silvia Arber, who - when kicking-off the first session - commented positively on the growing number of female professors at the Biozentrum.
As in the previous years, the poster sessions, with more than 70 posters, were an excellent occasion for those who couldn't be “on stage” to present their work. The Award Ceremony took place at the end of the day with the three poster prizes sponsored by Roche Diagnostics. Amongst the happy award winners were Lyciana Kocik and Tina Junne from Martin Spiess’ team who won the first prize, followed by Cornelia Loew from Joachim Seelig’s group, and Alexandre Soulard from Mike Hall’s team.
