Journey to Other Worlds – From the Cosmos to the Nanoworld

Come with scientists on a virtual journey of discovery – The University of Basel is organizing «Weltenreise – Vom Kosmos zur Nanowelt» (Journey to Other Worlds – From the Cosmos to the Nanoworld) together with the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI) and the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) on 18. November, 2011. A research scientist from the Biozentrum of the University of Basel, Prof. Anne Spang, will also accompany the visitors on this fascinating journey.

This virtual expedition is a journey from the vast cosmos into the minute nanoworld. The participants will experience, how the tiniest building blocks make life possible at all, how they work perfectly together and define themselves and protect each other. They will be able to experience the birth of a star, discover the building blocks of the universe and look into black holes.

It is in the nature of mankind not to be satisfied with how it all functions. We want to apply and use what we have learnt. For this reason, the research scientists will take the visitors with them further along their voyage of discovery, giving them the opportunity to get to know which applications in the human body the nanosciences make possible and finally to dare to have look into the future.

Along with Prof. Anne Spang from the Biozentrum, further Professors from the University of Basel, Prof. Christian Schönenberger, Prof. Friedrich Karl Thielemann, Prof. J.P. Maier, Prof. Jörg Huwyler und Prof. Wolfgang Meier will also serve as “tour guides”. Responsible for the visual realization is Prof. Michael Renner (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland). The initiator of the project and its coordinator is Mark Inglin from the University of Basel.

«Weltenreise – Vom Kosmos zur Nanowelt» promises fascinating entertainment, unique visual effects, spectacular photography and film footage (incl. from the Hubble Space Telescope) and uncomplicated information helping to better understand what, on both a large and small scale, holds the world together.

This event is held in German and designed for a broad, general and in science interested audience, for students as well as for young adults entertaining with the idea of studying science.

«Weltenreise – Vom Kosmos zur Nanowelt», Schauspielhaus, Theater Basel, on Friday, 18. November, 2011, from 7.30 pm to 10.30 pm, Admission: 15 Francs, Students and AHV-pensioners: 10 Francs, Advanced bookings: Theater Basel. The Info Market on Nanosciences and studying Nanoscience is open from 6:00 pm.
