The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. Skilled and motivated individuals are encouraged to apply for a 4-year PhD Fellowship in the research group of Roderick Lim at the Biozentrum, University of Basel, Switzerland.
The Lim Lab is interested in nuclear pore complex (NPC) function and the regulation of nucleocytoplasmic transport (NCT). Importantly, malfunctioning NPCs and defective NCT are linked to aging as well as pathologies ranging from cancer to neurodegenerative disorders and viral pathogenesis.
In this project, we want to study novel function(s) of nuclear transport receptors, their regulation at NPCs and implications in human disease. Methods will comprise, amongst others, CRISPR-based genome editing, state-of-the art confocal imaging (including FRET, FRAP, and super-resolution techniques) and atomic force microscopy (AFM).
Besides basic research, PhD candidates will also have to contribute to undergraduate level teaching.
Interested candidates should have a background in molecular cell biology, biophysics or related disciplines. Experience in optical/fluorescence imaging or AFM, including high-speed AFM is a plus. The successful candidate is expected to be highly interactive and capable of independent research in a team environment. A solid command of oral and written English is essential.
