Fellowship Program

The Biozentrum encourages talented, ambitious and highly motivated young scientists to apply to the Biozentrum Basel International PhD Program. This program offers prestigious PhD fellowships that are awarded on a competitive basis, provide direct entry into the Biozentrum PhD program and offer the fellows  a unique rotation-based selection of a research group of their own choice and a number of other incentives.

Prestigious and sought after fellowships

The “Fellowships for Excellence” are awarded to ten outstanding young scientists chosen out of hundreds of applicants from around the world every year. The program fosters scientific excellence and the career prospects of the candidates. More

Unique choice of lab, perks and incentives

The “Fellowships for Excellence” PhD students can select a research group of their choice after one or two two-month rotations in different research groups. They receive a personal, annual stipend, a salary for three years and other incentives. More

Conditions and application

Applicants to the “Fellowships for Excellence” must hold or receive in short a university degree. Applications must be submitted online between February 1, and June 20. More

Selection procedure

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview week at the end of August which provides a lot of opportunities for interaction with Research Group Leaders, PhD students and other candidates. More

Since its foundation in 2006 the “Fellowships for Excellence” program has recruited more than 45 talented students.  More


39 Fellows are currently doing their PhD at the Biozentrum, some of which are nearing completion. They come from 15 countries. Half of these PhD students are women. Fellows


38 young scientists have completed their doctorates within the framework of the "Fellowships for Excellence" program. Some of them continue to work as the Biozentrum as postdocs, while others have established their own start-up company. Alumni


The research of the “Fellowships for Excellence” students is reflected in 40 publications. Publications


The committee is made up of one representative from each Focal Area. The term of office is five years. The program lead rotates within the committee.
