2016

On December 12, 2016, the 4th TriRhena Metabolism Club Meeting took place at the Biozentrum. At this informal meeting scientists and students interested in cellular and systemic metabolism had the opportunity to present their research, discuss the latest results and foster collaborations. The event was organized by Christoph Handschin, Biozentrum, University of Basel, J. Andrew Pospisilik, MPI of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, Freiburg, and Romeo Ricci, IGBMC, Strasbourg.

4th TriRhena Metabolism Club Meeting

For the tenth anniversary of the Fellowships for Excellence program, a public symposium took place at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel on 14th and 15th June, 2016. At the two-day scientific symposium, organized by the FFE Fellows, several distinguished scientists including the Nobel laureate Ada Yonath presented their work. Since 2006, the Biozentrum has promoted the careers of talented, young scientists through the Fellowships for Excellence program, which was initially established with support from the Werner Siemens Foundation.

On Friday April 1, 2016, the Gottfried Schatz Memorial Symposium took place at the Biozentrum to commemorate the life and scientific work of this outstanding scientist and passionate author and essayist. The biochemist Prof. em. Gottfried Schatz, who passed away on October 1, 2015, carried out research at the Biozentrum for about a quarter of a century and also after his retirement remained deeply attached to it. At the scientific symposium and the subsequent social event, longtime companions and the family of Jeff Schatz had the opportunity to meet and to revive their memories of this exceptional person.

“How to shape the vascular tree” or “Modeling of leukemia in zebrafish” – these are just two of a list of interesting presentations held at the 9th SURV Zebrafish Meeting, SURV stands for Swiss and Upper Rhine Valley. The mini-symposium, which took place at the Biozentrum on February 19, 2016, brought together group leaders, post-docs, PhD and master students from Switzerland and the surrounding region. Claudia Lengerke from the Department of Biomedicine and Heinz-Georg Belting from the Biozentrum were the organizers of the meeting.

2015

On June 9, 2015, the TriRhena Metabolism Club Meeting took place for the third time at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. At this informal meeting scientists and students interested in cellular and systemic metabolism had the opportunity to present their research, discuss the latest results and foster collaborations. The event was organized by Christoph Handschin, Biozentrum, J. Andrew Pospisilik, Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics, Freiburg and Romeo Ricci, IGBMC, Strasbourg.

2014

The Tri-Regional Stem Cell and Developmental Biology Meeting took place for the first time at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel on September 25, 2014. This one day meeting brought scientists from different research institutes in Basel, Freiburg and Strasbourg together to discuss the newest research findings in the fields of stem cell and developmental biology. The event gave young scientists the opportunity to present their work along with promoting dialogue and collaborations between the scientists of the tri-regional area. Clemens Cabernard form the Biozentrum and Aimée Zuniga from the Department of Biomedicine were the organizers.

On June 5, 2014, the „Basel Fellowships for Excellence Symposium 2014“ took place at the Biozentrum. Scientific luminaries from different fields were invited as keynote speakers but also fellows and alumni of the „Fellowships for Excellence“ International PhD Program presented  their research. The symposium was organized by students of the „Fellowships for Excellence“ PhD Program.

On May 10, 2014, the Biozentrum and the D-BSSE opened their doors to the public. The visitors, including families, students, all those interested in research or previous employees, could experience science first hand. The research market, talks as well as open labs offered the visitors an insight into the fascinating work carried out at the Biozentrum.

On the 21st and 22nd March, 2014, the symposium "Molecular Mechanisms of Development and Evolution" took place at the Biozentrum. This was to celebrate Prof. em. Walter Gehring's 75th birthday as well as the 30th anniversary of the discovery of the so-called homeobox, an important segment of DNA that has revolutionized research in developmental biology.  A wide range of lectures from the field of developmental biology was presented to the visitors, among them many of Walter Gehring's former colleagues. The event was organized by Prof. Markus Affolter.

2013

On 22nd March 2013, the Biozentrum of the University of Basel held a scientific symposium on the newest developments and advances in Structural Biology and Biophysics. Numerous internationally renowned scientists were invited to present their current research in the field of nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, crystallography and computer simulation of biomolecules.

2012

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel held a ceremonial farewell symposium in the honor of the infection biologist Prof. Guy Cornelis on June 8, 2012. Internationally renowned scientists and scientific colleagues came to Basel in recognition of Cornelis’ remarkable scientific accomplishments.

On Thursday 26th January, many internationally distinguished scientists came together to participate in the farewell symposium honoring Ueli Aebi, Professor of Structural Biology at the Biozentrum, University of Basel and former Director of the Maurice E. Müller Institute for Structural Biology.

2011

In September 2011, the Biozentrum of the University of Basel celebrated its 40-Year Jubilee with various events for the public, politicians and scientists. Since its foundation in 1971, its scientists have contributed with outstanding research results to milestones in biology and regularly receive prestigious awards and nominations.

On 16th September 2012, the research area Infection Biology at the Biozentrum celebrated its 10th anniversary as an integral part of the 40 Year Jubilee of the Biozentrum. Internationally renowned scientists presented their research in a one day symposium on "Molecular Aspects of Infectious Diseases" that also included three poster sessions.
