Fall 1975: The young biochemist Antal von Nèmethy has fulfilled his dreams: He works as a postdoc in a renowned research institute in New York seeking a new cancer drug. But then his girlfriend commits suicide and his search for the reasons takes him back to the old continent, to Vienna, Budapest and the places of his childhood…

Gottfried Schatz was a Professor of Biochemistry at the Biozentrum from 1974 to 2000 . Previous to this, he carried out research at Cornell University (USA). He is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and other academic institutions abroad. He has been awarded many prestigious prizes (incl. Louis Jeantet, Marcel Benoist) and two honorary doctorates. He was the Secretary General of EMBO and President of the Swiss Science and Technology Council. He is currently active writing both essays and books.
