Antje Hempel awarded Marie Heim-Vögtlin Fellowship

Antje Hempel was awarded a Marie Heim-Vögtlin Research grant from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF).

Antje Hempel, a postdoc in the lab of Urs Jenal, has recently been awarded a Marie Heim-Vögtlin Fellowship (MHV) by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). She is one of 42 highly qualified women scientists, who will be supported by an MHV contribution for the next two years. A total of 147 women researchers from various disciplines applied for a MHV fellowship. With the MHV program, the SNSF supports female scientists with family commitments to continue pursuing their scientific career in the long term.

For Antje Hempel this contribution means that after an extended maternity break she can re-start her research and take the first steps towards becoming an independent researcher. In the past years the microbiologist was supported by a “Human Frontiers Science Program” fellowship. In her MHV project Antje Hempel investigates the role of the bacterial signaling molecule c-di-GMP in the activation of transcription factors and its importance in cell cycle progression and morphogenesis.

This year’s MHV grants were awarded for the 26th time and the last time. In autumn 2017, the new funding scheme for excellent women researchers at postdoc level called PRIMA – Promoting Women in Academia – will be launched.
