Postdoctoral Researcher in Proteomics of Infectious Diseases (100%)

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

A postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Dirk Bumann at the Biozentrum, University of Basel.

Infectious diseases are a major worldwide health concern. Current therapies have become increasingly inefficient because of emerging antimicrobial resistance, while the pipeline of new drugs is drying up. To avoid a public health emergency, the entire antibiotic research community must work together to reinvigorate research into new antibiotics. The available position will be part of the new Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research “AntiResist” that focuses its efforts on understanding the physiology of key bacterial pathogens in human patients, and mimicking relevant conditions in tissue culture models to identify new and innovative antimicrobial strategies. We collaborate with multi-national groups from academia, hospitals, and industry. 

Your responsibilities are
To determine proteomes of various pathogens in specimens from human patients using state-of-the-art LC-MS approaches in close collaboration with the proteomics core facility. You will determine signatures of key factors of bacterial physiology in human patient samples and use them as benchmarks for improving in vitro systems. 

Your profile
PhD in one of the following disciplines: microbiology, biochemistry, bioinformatics, biophysics, chemistry, pharmacology, and software engineering. You have a deep interest and preferentially some hands-on experience in current LC-MS based proteomics methods such as PRM and SWATH/DIA.

Our multidisciplinary group includes microbiologists, biochemists, chemists, pharmacologists, and software engineers with expertise in proteomics, multi-color high-speed FACS sorting, confocal microscopy, metabolomics, microbial genetics, and in silico modeling (e.g., Science 2019 10.1126/science.aax7898; Nature Microbiology 2017 10.1038/nmicrobiol.2016.268; Cell 2014 10.1016/j.cell.2014.06.045). We have excellent support from core facilities with expert staff and state-of-the art equipment (including Thermo Exploris 480, Fusion Lumos and Q-Exactive HF mass spectrometers; BD FACSAria IIIu, FACS Fortessa; Zeiss Z1 lightsheet, TissueCyte, Zeiss LSM 880 Airy).
