Partners & Collaborations

Collaboration is our strengh

Since its foundation more than 40 years ago, the Biozentrum has always had two characteristic features: its international orientation and numerous collaborations with other universities and institutes both at home and abroad. International scientific exchange benefits students as well as researchers in their careers and shapes the unique research culture of the Biozentrum. In this way, the Biozentrum's reputation for research and teaching extends far beyond its national borders, not least due to its location where Switzerland, Germany and France meet.

Located in the heart of the city of Basel, the Biozentrum is very close to the major pharmaceutical companies Novartis and Roche, to other scientific institutes such as the Friedrich Miescher Institute (FMI), to institutes affiliated with the University of Basel, including the Department of Biomedicine (DBM), the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (STPH), and the Swiss Nanoscience Institute (SNI), as well as the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering (D-BSSE) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zurich. In addition, the Biozentrum is home to four research groups that also belong to the Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics (SIB). Three further SIB groups affiliated to the ETH Zurich are also based in Basel. And finally, the Pharmazentrum and the Basel University Hospital (USB), both scientific partners, are in the immediate vicinity. Together with the successful business location of Basel, this concentration of academic institutes constitutes an attractive Life Sciences Cluster, from which several start-ups and spin-offs have already developed.
