Cellular footprints : examples of emergent memory effects in cell migration
Cell migration emerges from complex intracellular processes that drive cell self-propulsion and integrate a variety of chemical and physical cues from the extracellular environment. At the same time, cells actively modify their surroundings by depositing biochemical signals or mechanically remodeling the extracellular matrix. In this talk, I will discuss how these self-induced environmental perturbations influence cell trajectories across different spatial and temporal scales. I will show how these feedback interactions between cells and their environment can profoundly affect large-scale migration dynamics, both at the single-cell and collective levels, and effectively endow cells with a memory of their past trajectories.
