1988 - 2025 | Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology

Markus Affolter was active in research and teaching from 1988 until his retirement in 2025, initially as a postdoc and subsequently as a Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology at the Biozentrum. His research focused on key questions of embryonic development, for example, how complex organs arise from individual cells, and how organ growth is regulated. He also developed innovative tools such as nanobodies that can be used to specifically control proteins in cells. In addition to research and teaching, Affolter was active in several scientific associations and is also a member of EMBO and the Leopoldina.
