From telomere-to-telomere assemblies to Leonardo da Vinci: new views of the Y chromosome

Although the draft human genome was announced in 2003, the human genome was completely "solved" for the first time only in 2023. The Y chromosome turned out to be the most difficult for the same reasons it is incredibly interesting. Normal Y's in healthy males can range in size from 45MB-85MB. No other human chromosome in non-cancer varies so much. Solving the Y has required the development and combination of technologies both classical and new, wet and bioinformatic. The approaches and results together inform and inspire diverse fields including sequence-informed medicine, evolution, forensics, anthropology, and now, art history.
