Innate immune defense against intracellular bacterial pathogens

Intracellular bacterial pathogens pose a unique set of challenges for the immune system. In turn, eukaryotic organisms possess evolutionarily conserved innate immune sensors and signaling pathways to sense and respond to infection. I will present our recent studies on understanding how cytosolic multiprotein complexes termed inflammasomes trigger pyroptosis during infection, including our recent findings indicating that nutrient sensing is required for optimal inflammasome activation.
