DevOps Engineer/Software developer (60-100%)

Starting immediately or as per agreement

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. It consists of 32 groups and 500 employees that research how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

The Research IT technology platform is the primary contact point for scientific IT projects at the Biozentrum. We support the Biozentrum’s scientists and staff with expertise, services and custom software development to facilitate research data management, analysis and collaboration.

The Imaging Core Facility (IMCF) at the Biozentrum is a state-of-the-art platform for highly developed light microscopes. Our services range from initial advice in microscope selection to experiment set up and final analysis of the imaging data. We aim to support research groups in their work, with the latest microscopy techniques and software solutions.

Your position
We are looking for someone to strengthen our teams in a DevOps role to administer and extend IT services that serve the scientific community at our research institute.

This position is at the interface of two of the Biozentrum's technology platforms: Research IT and the Imaging Core Facility. We collaborate closely on a number of solutions that you will contribute to. Typical projects comprise

  • development and deployment of web-based tools for work organization and data management (e.g. OMERO)
  • design and operation of a scientific virtual desktop infrastructure for large-scale bio-imaging data analysis (VAMP)
  • specific software/hardware set-ups to process and analyze data from instruments

On one hand, your tasks revolve around supporting existing applications and services. You make sure that our production infrastructure is running smoothly by monitoring and maintaining servers and services; moreover, you enjoy the exciting and challenging task to improve and evolve these solutions. On the other hand, you work with the Research IT and IMCF teams to design and develop new solutions (often web-based) for our scientists and administrative staff.

The position requires agility, open-mindedness and creativity paired with a commitment to provide reliable, high-quality services. In turn, the position offers a wealth of opportunities for satisfying, self-driven work and learning opportunities within a unique and exciting scientific environment.

Your responsibilities

  • Planning, design, administration and monitoring of infrastructure (Linux, Windows, Citrix/Xen and VMware environments), software (application software, web servers) and databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS-SQL)
  • Supporting research groups, technology platforms and administrative units with requirements analysis, planning and implementation of IT projects
  • Contribute to custom software development, with an emphasis on web technologies.

Your profile
We are looking for an enthusiastic person with a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Bioinformatics or equivalent demonstrated experience and passion to work in an academic environment and in small cross-functional teams where your contribution makes a real impact. You enjoy taking tricky problems apart and working step by step to put a satisfactory solution in place.

You know how to set up and operate servers and services in a way that they can be relied on. Moreover, you bring analytical and programming skills to the table that you apply in project teams. You like to work in an agile work environment and most importantly embrace a service-oriented approach. Finally, you’re motivated to acquire further skills on the job and like us, you believe in continuous improvement: Not only of the system landscape and tools, but also of your skills.

  • Very familiar with operation of Linux/Apache/* stacks, MySQL, PostgreSQL, familiar with other setups (Windows, MS-SQL). Experience with virtualization, containers, orchestration a definite plus.
  • Experienced in web development using at least one of the following: PHP/Zend Framework/Laminas, Python/Django, other frameworks a plus. Other coding and data management experience highly welcome.
  • Comfortable applying software development best practices and documenting your work reliably (source code versioning, unit testing, continuous integration, wiki for documentation, etc.)

Good communication skills in English are required, knowledge of German is an asset.

We offer
The Biozentrum offers a cutting-edge research infrastructure, a highly international environment that provides numerous opportunities to learn more, and excellent working conditions. The position is initially for 2 years with the possibility of extension. Salary and benefits according to University of Basel standards.
