Prof. Dr. Stephan Grzesiek, Emeritus

1999 – 2025 | Professor of Structural Biology

Stephan Grzesiek was Professor of Structural Biology at the Biozentrum, from 1999 until his retirement in 2025. His research was dedicated to the development and application of high-resolution Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to elucidate the structure, function, and dynamics of biological macromolecules. He pioneered NMR techniques for the direct detection of hydrogen bonds and the sensitive assignment of NMR signals, and made significant contributions to the understanding of disease-related proteins, including the cancer drug target Abelson kinase, the HIV-1 coreceptor CCR5 and the β1-adrenergic receptor. Stephan Grzesiek served as member of the Swiss National Research Council, is a Fellow, and currently serves as President of the International Society of Magnetic Resonance (ISMAR).
