1980 – 1985 | Professor of Cell Biology

Edward De Robertis, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, studied Medicine in Uruguay and completed his PhD in Chemistry at the Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1974. His doctoral studies were followed by postdoctoral training at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. In 1980 De Robertis was appointed Professor of Cell Biology at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. In 1985 he became Professor of Biological Chemistry at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California in Los Angeles, and from 1994 until 2019 when he reached emeritus status, he was also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UCLA. De Robertis studied the conserved molecular processes that regulate cell differentiation in bilateral animals. He is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and received a Honoris Causa doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris.
