Prof. Dr. Edward De Robertis

Edward De Robertis, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, studied Medicine in Uruguay and completed his PhD in Chemistry at the Leloir Institute in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1974. His doctoral studies were followed by postdoctoral training at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England. In 1980 De Robertis was appointed Professor of Cell Biology at the Biozentrum, University of Basel. In 1985 he became Professor of Biological Chemistry at the David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California in Los Angeles, and since 1994, he is also an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at UCLA. Together with his research group, De Robertis studies the conserved molecular processes that regulate cell differentiation in bilateral animals. Edward De Robertis is a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and received a Honoris Causa doctorate from the Sorbonne in Paris.
