Biozentrum Symposium 2025: A day dedicated to science

On June 12, 2025, the Biozentrum community gathered again for its traditional scientific symposium: Professors, postdocs, students, and staff came together to present and exchange insights on the institute’s latest research and achievements. This event is an integral part of the institute's annual program.

In a refreshing change of scenery, the researchers of our institute stepped out of their labs and gathered at the uptown Basel area for the 2025 Biozentrum Symposium. This year’s organizing committee, headed by Prof. Silvia Arber and Prof. Ben Engel, provided an exciting and diverse program. This event, bringing together about 300 Biozentrics, showcased the broad range of cutting-edge research across the institute, while fostering interdisciplinary dialogue in an inspiring environment.

Insights into latest research

The Biozentrum Symposium serves as a networking platform for the entire research community and celebrates outstanding scientific achievements. In this spirit, numerous speakers from various research fields at the Biozentrum gave a well-balanced potpourri of presentations, providing the audience with an overview of the diverse research projects and offering fascinating insights into different concepts and methods employed. In their keynote lectures, Prof. Prisca Liberali from the FMI and the D-BSSE, ETH Zürich, and Prof. Gaia Pigino from Human Technopole Milan offered new insights into tissue-level coordination and the structural biology of cilia, respectively.

In addition, one-minute flash talks and the poster sessions offered young researchers a great opportunity to present their own work. The contributions were actively rated by the other participants throughout the meeting. The poster sessions culminated in an award ceremony at the end of the day. The prize for the best poster went to Eva Jiménez Siebert (group Knut Drescher), the best flash talk was given by Celina Hartman (group Fiona Doetsch), and the winner of the poster game was Maryam Mohammadi (group Thomas Braun).

PhD student prize winners

Announced were also the winners of the Gottfried Schatz PhD student prize and the J. C. W. Shepherd PhD student prize: Ivana Petrovic, a postdoc in the group of Prof. Stephan Grzesiek, has received the Gottfried Schatz PhD student prize for her outstanding PhD thesis on the molecular basis of the impact of GPCR phosphorylation on arrestin interactions and receptor endocytosis. Anna Leder, a PhD student in the group of Prof. Sebastian Hiller, and Vilde Kveim, a former PhD student in the group of Prof. Flavio Donato, have been awarded the J. C. W. Shepherd PhD student prize for scientific excellence.

In his traditional “State-of-the-Union”, Director Prof. Alex Schier addressed recent attacks on science and evidence-based decision making. In today’s increasingly polarized world, science and scientists face mounting challenges: misinformation, political interference, and growing public distrust threaten the integrity of scientific work. Academic freedom, once taken for granted, is under pressure even in established democracies. This evolving landscape demands not only scientific excellence but also a renewed commitment to transparency, outreach, and engagement with society. The scientific community carries the responsibility to advocate for evidence-based thinking, foster public trust, and ensure that science remains a force for progress and informed decision-making.

The symposium concluded with a dinner, providing an ambience ending to a stimulating and thought-provoking day that once again highlighted the vibrant scientific culture at the Biozentrum.
