Prof. Dr. Heinrich Reichert, Emeritus

2006 - 2015 | Professor of Neurobiology and Molecular Zoology

Heinrich Reichert (*1949, † 2019) was Professor of Neurobiology and Molecular Zoology at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel from 2006 to 2015. He investigated the development of the brain in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster and discovered that the maturation process from neuronal stem cells to nerve cells follows a defined molecular program. Reichert identified important genes controlling this program and could show that mutations lead to uncontrolled stem cell division and thus become origin of brain tumors. Furthermore, he actively supported the cross-border scientific exchange in the Upper Rhine Valley. He has been co-founder and vice president of the European neuroscience network “Neurex”.
